Body-Sculpture Photography

Continuing with last weeks aim to get some good photography work into my portfolio, I decided to return to the ideas of using my own body to explore my relationship with my themes and, like Carole Schneeman, use my body as a material. After visiting the Tim Walker

exhibition at the V&A a few weeks ago, I felt inspired by his strange use of camera angles and a fish eye lense, and just had to get my hands on a camera and have a play. I wanted to continue pushing ambiguity and the body as meat further, so I decided to strip down to my birthday suit, grab some fleshy sculptures and mess around. I aimed to make the sculptures morph with my body, as if they were a growth from my own form. I played with angles, with close-ups and with the very fun fish eye lense. I tested out being more sexual with it to play on the attraction-repulsion idea, but in most I kept to the body as flesh.


I was pleased with how they came out, the lense making some areas bulbus and almost ridiculous, and the similarities between the fleshy sculptures and my own body, the cellulite and the finger marks in the clay, the colouring, their strange forms. I also played with making these into a slideshow, using a chewing sound to mark the changing of slides (since sound work has got such a good result with grossing out an audience in the past!) instead of the old-fashioned click. This was inspired by a presentation-style thing I saw at the Tate, which was full of quotes by artists about the materiality of materials. Everytime it changed to a different quote, it made that old school clicking sound, which I remember felt extremely eerie. I was pleased with how this worked on my slideshow, as the chewing referenced the body as food stuff, without the work becoming explicitly obvious. I also felt this is a more interesting and engaging way to display the photographic work to an audience. I think this piece works as a whole because its just simple.
